A Discovery of Witches is an excellent fantasy series based on the Deborah Harkness `All Souls’ trilogy. The British television series is on Sky Atlantic and has a wide cast but as with the books, the series is based around the character Diana Bishop.

Brief outline of the series:

Diana Bishop, an unwilling witch is thrown into the life she has been unwilling to embrace after discoveing ‘Ashmole 782’. This leads to a discovery which opens up a whole world of vampires, daemons, witches and forbidden love. Diana must form unlikely alliances and falls in love with vampire Matthew Clairmont, as they try to protect the book, each other and discover the secrets that lie with-in the book.

Review:

So I am going to try and review season one of A Discovery Of Witches. Season one was released in the UK in 2018 and I didn’t watch watch the re-run before the release of season two, so this might be a very short review!

From what I can remember season one was a very good, I didn’t think Teresa Palmer was the right person for the lead role but as the season goes on, she really does grow into the character and you do start to build up a bit of an attachment for her and the love story between Diana and Matthew adds a very good storyline to the series.

The casting for the show is very very good, Owen Teale and Trevor Eve put in great performaces and Malin Buska is excellent as ‘Satu’. There are a lot of characters in the series and I think the casting team did an amazing job.

I feel the series has a good balance of fantasy action and drama, the dialogue between the different characters and how they link together has been done really well, I haven’t read the books but after doing some research it seems that the books and the series do not differ to much.

As with most of my reviews, I don’t like to go into to much detail about the story and what happens, as not to spoil it for anyone that hasn’t seen it but Episode 1.3 , 1.4 and 1.7 are excellent – the ‘fight’ scenes between Diana & Satu really stood out to me!

A Discovery of Witches is great viewing and I do recommend you to watch the show if you haven’t already seen it!
